AbiSource - a free program with spell check, word count, compatible with RTF, WordPad and Microsoft Office/Word. Don't waste your money when you can have it for free.

 
Creative Commons - looking to give away your work for free? Or maybe you only want to give parts of it away for free? Current copyright law says you own the copyright the second you create work, but should you want to give something back to the greater good (the public domain) you can do so by registering your work with the Creative Commons.

Horror Writer's Association - this organization holds the annual Bram Stoker's Awards and is comprised of such members as Stephen King, Dean Koontz, McCammon, and many others
Major Geeks - visit these guys for loads of freeware and shareware on the web; they check all their programs for malware and viruses, and such programs as AbiSource are listed there.
